| High School Wrestling: Roosevelt's Phillips earns state trip despite ...
He had been the No. 1 seed in his weight class. "I was upset for a few days, but I knew I couldn't do anything to change it," he said. "It's been a real motivator for me, just thinking about how quick something can be taken away." Phillips also suffered his only defeat of the season after losing his temper and shoving Madison's Manuel Rocha in the face at the end of a tie match. Swoyer said Phillips accepted his punishment — three days of post-practice running — without complaint. "As long as he represents himself and the school in the right way, I don't mind a little swagger at all," said Swoyer, who is in his first year at Roosevelt. "Other than that one incident, he's done that." The reward comes Friday in Austin, with an opportunity to compete for a state title.
Coming Soon: SR to Release E-mail Exchanges ... (Not so fast...)
Moving back to Moscow broke my heart, mostly because of my extreme fondness for cycling in Boise (I should throw a Shout-Out to the Ridges to Rivers system, too, with wonderful mountain biking, too). Moscow just can't compete with that, although the new Latah Trail helps (if they'd just get it paved!) DFO: You've really hit on something here, MM. It's relatively easy to settle on the 7 - 10 natural wonders of Idaho. But what about the manmade ones? The Boise River Greenbelt definitely would be in there. And the North Idaho bike trails (Path of the Hiawatha, Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes, North Idaho Centennial Trail) should be, too. What other manmade places would be on a "wonders" list? .
Moffitt House got up and went
If you think you saw an old, two-story house moving along a Hallandale Beach road Sunday morning, you weren't hallucinating. It was actually the 90,000-pound, 102-year-old Moffitt House. Local historians say it is Broward County's second-oldest standing residence after the Stranahan House in Fort Lauderdale. Developers moved all 2,450 square feet of the historic home, made of sturdy Dade County pine, from its original location at 134 S. Dixie Hwy. to a few blocks south next to another historic home, the 84-year-old Curci House at 324 SW Second Ave. The hourlong feat was accomplished by Brownie Moving and Heavy Hauling, based in Fort Pierce. ''It went very smoothly,'' said developer Richard Shan, 45, noting the event had been planned for about a year.
German carmakers lead in reducing CO2 emissions
BMW AG, Volkswagen AG and other German carmakers cut carbon-dioxide emissions more than European rivals last year as they struggle to reach planned European Union targets. German brands sold domestically had 2 percent lower CO2 output last year, a greater reduction than French and Japanese models sold in Europe's largest economy, said Matthias Wissmann, president of the VDA German automobile manufacturers' association, at a briefing today in Berlin. The European Union plans a cap on carmakers that will force them to reduce CO2 emissions, a gas linked with global warming. The draft proposal, which is being negotiated this year among European lawmakers, will reduce the carbon emissions to an average 130 grams per kilometer (0.6 mile) for a manufacturer's fleet by 2012, with an additional 10 grams coming from improvements in tires, air conditioning and other vehicle parts.
2007 Mitsubishi Outlander LS 4WD Review
Does Mitsubishi have an identity crisis? When its name is mentioned, some people think of SUVs, like the Montero, while others think of the Lancer Evolution high-performance rally replica. If so, the company is working hard to blend the best of both sides of its reputation. With its second-generation 2007 Outlander, Mitsubishi has merged an SUV with a rally car. A wild claim? You'd be forgiven for thinking so, as performance and handling are not usually associated with a crossover SUV. But the new Outlander, which shares little besides the name with the original, previews the chassis platform that will underly the next-generation Lancer Evo, and its four-wheel drive system is meant more for traction and cornering on pavement than traditional four-wheeling. In the crowded and competitive mid-size, middle-class crossover field, the 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander stands out by virtue of its sporty abilities.
Developer Says City Keeping Him From Renovating Crime-Ridden Area
ORLANDO, Fla. -- A developer says he has big plans to renovate several rundown apartment complexes in an Orlando neighborhood that has been riddled with crime. But he says the city is standing in the way. Developer Jimmy Yuken wants to renovate the Peppertree apartments on Mercy Drive, one by one. The problem is they all have code violations and the city says the most dangerous violations, including the unsafe stairs leading to the second floor units, have to be fixed in less than 60 days whether someone is living in the buildings or not. "We put in all the central air conditioning ducts," Yuken said during a walk-through of one of the units. Jimmy Yuken is in a hurry to gut the Peppertree apartment complex, but says he can't do it on the city's deadline.
