Officer Barely Dodges Pole through Car Window Tragedy

A chase ended with a pole smashed right through the windshield of a Edgewood ISD patrol car. The school district police officer was after two men who stole an air-conditioning unit.

The Edgwood ISD officer saw the two people stealing the air conditioner. She chased after them into the street, where the two men separated and one ran right in front of her police car. She then swerved to avoid the suspect and instead smashed into a chain link fence. A post from the fence crashed through the windshield.

Luckily no one was in the passenger seat of the patrol car, because the fence post went completely through the windshield and into the passenger seat of the police car.

The two thieves got away with the air conditioning unit they stole from the abandoned Edgewood Elementary School.

Volcanic gas crimps Crater Rim Drive

HILO » Dangerously high levels of sulfur dioxide gas in a small but popular area of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park have officials warning visitors to stay in their cars with their air conditioner on re-circulation and to just drive through that area.

The main area affected is a 5-mile stretch of Crater Rim Drive on the downwind, south side of Kilauea caldera. That means no stopping at a popular parking area at the beginning of a short path to Halemaumau Crater overlook.

"Area closed due to dangerous volcanic gas. Stay in your car!" yellow-and-black warning signs say.

The greatest danger is to babies and children, pregnant women and people with asthma or heart conditions, said spokeswoman Mardie Lane.

Successful Breast-Feeding

Ask your doctor if your hospital has one. Or see a lactation consultant -- you can ask your doctor or the La Leche League for a referral. You should make these preparations before you'll be ready to breast-feed, Lebbing and Bonuck advised.

Just a few sessions with a lactation consultant can pay off, Bonuck said. "You will understand the normal physiology of how the milk is produced," she said. The consultant, working with a doll, can help women practice the best positions to breast-feed and get comfortable with the concept.

Be sure the hospital personnel know you want to breast-feed.

"Make your wishes known," Bonuck said. "Some [hospitals] have cards that say, 'Breast-feed only.' " That reduces the risk of confusion and your baby mistakenly getting a bottle of formula, Bonuck said.

Kidd now officially a Maverick, Cuban says

As a player, you just want to come to work and play hard and give your team a chance to win, Kidd said during over the weekend. Hopefully you put yourself in position to win a championship. Theres no guarantee.

The Mavs resume play Wednesday against the Western Conference-leading Hornets in New Orleans. If Kidd can play it will kick things off with Kidd going up against the Hornets rising point guard, Chris Paul.

An indication of just how tough the West is with most teams having 30 or fewer games to play is that the Mavs (35-18) are two games out of the conference lead, but also two games out of the lottery.

Kidd said hes looking forward to returning to the West, where the style of play is faster and more wide open than in the laboring East.

I love to run, Kidd said.

Hog-wild with tradition

Others learn how to delicately thread casings onto the well-worn, cast-iron sausage maker.

A sense of festivity fills the air.

"It's good for the younger children to see how older people years ago had to do this," says Naomi Wimberly, who is 63 and grew up not far from here, butchering hogs and making sausage.

"Hog-killing, as it was called, was an important ritual of rural life for nearly three centuries in South Carolina," explains Prince.

The task has since become a rare event.

"Reasons for the decline are both demographic and economic. Although South Carolina's population has increased, the number of families owning livestock has decreased. Even in rural areas, hog-raising has become the exception rather than the rule," Prince says.
