Animals Impounded, Building Nears Capacity

Norman, Okla. -- Officials in Norman impounded more than 30 dogs and cats this weekend. The animals are now at the Norman Animal Welfare Shelter, but overcrowding at the facility just became an even bigger issue. KSBI-TV's Kealey McIntire has more.

Nearly 175 dogs and cats a week are taken to the Norman Animal Welfare Shelter. This weekend 23 cats and nine dogs were impounded and were taken to the shelter in addition to the normal activity. Major Jim Maisano, a Norman police officer, works closely with the animal welfare division. He says they're glad to help, but this weekend's activity adds to the overcrowding issue.

"So that takes up a lot of our space not counting the average number of dogs and cats we take in during the week," says Maisano.

Contractor emerges as charity's Champion

Vandals destroyed the heater at the American Red Cross' headquarters on Sixth Street in Modesto last week, sending a shiver through the charity, but things began to warm up again Tuesday.

Champion Industrial Contractors Inc. of Modesto donated the $2,500 deductible the Red Cross would have had to pay to replace the heating and air conditioning unit, said Rebecca Ciszek, executive director of the Red Cross's Stanislaus County chapter. Then the contractor installed a $5,702 replacement unit. The balance will be covered by insurance.

By early afternoon, the place was heating up. "The classroom is nice and warm," Ciszek said about 1 p.m. "It took a little while because that room had been cold now for a week."

The donation means the organization won't have to dig into its charity funds to fix the unit, Ciszek said.

Avril's hometown beckons

It's the little town where singer Avril Lavigne cut her teeth, but Napanee has other things to recommend it.

It's close to Highway 401 and the main Montreal-Toronto rail line, so the necessary transportation links are there. Kingston and Belleville are within easy reach, so the benefits of a major urban centre are available.

Perhaps best of all, the town has a well-preserved, Victorian-era downtown, as well as established residential neighbourhoods full of mature trees and large, affordable homes with wide verandas and lots of curb appeal.

7387 COUNTY RD. 9 ASKING PRICE: $419,000 AGENT: Jim Stafford, Century 21 Lanthorn Real Estate Ltd., Napanee THE PROPERTY: A detached home with four bedrooms and 1-1/2 bathrooms on a 206- by 219-foot lot. .

Speaker talks energy savings

ESCANABA — Energy audits and energy-efficiency upgrades are a great way for businesses to save money as well as positively impact the environment, said a guest speaker at Escanaba's Economic Summit at city hall Wednesday. “Energy audits are a great investment because you need to learn, in all these areas, where you can save," said Kevin Cook, president of G-ENERGY and a board member of Michigan Green. Cook said right now is the “perfect storm of energy" because economics are really important, people are interested in the green movement, and businesses are seeking energy independence. “Energy's going to always be a major issue," he said. “It's a great way to save." Cook said energy audits are a way that businesses — including stores, restaurants, warehouses or industries — can save energy which results in bottom-line savings.

UAE gas supply is 2o% below peak demand

Abu Dhabi: When summer temperatures soar and power stations work at full capacity, gas supplies in the the UAE are around 20 per cent below demand, an official said on Wednesday.

Power demand and the population in the UAE are rising 10 per cent to 13 per cent per year, Khalid Al Awadi, gas operations manager at retailer Emirates General Petro-leum Corporation (Emarat) told an energy conference.

When air-conditioning units worked at full blast across the country last summer, gas demand peaked at around 5.5 billion cubic feet per day (cfd), a billion cfd above current maximum supply of 4.5 billion cfd, he said.

"The peak shortfall is about one billion cfd per day, which is being met with expensive diesel oil," he told reporters. Apart from burning oil products such as diesel, industrial users also turned to coal in some parts of the UAE last year.
