| AC on cold morning leads to Estates grow-house bust
An air conditioner that was in use on an unusually cold morning helped lead investigators to a suspected marijuana grow house operation in Golden Gate Estates. Delfin H. Puentes, 39, of Fort Myers, was arrested Thursday and charged with marijuana trafficking -- more than 25 pounds -- and possession of narcotic paraphernalia. Reports say Puentes operated a marijuana grow house at 1781 8th Ave. N.E. Earlier this month a deputy on patrol noticed that an air conditioning unit was in use at the house on a cold morning. As the deputy approached the residence, he could smell the odor of growing marijuana. The house appeared to be vacant at the time. Around 10 a.m. Thursday, a blue Nissan Pathfinder driven by Puentes left the house, traveling 51 mph on Eighth Avenue Northeast, where the posted speed is 35 mph.
Harvesting Rainwater by Not Letting It Go to Waste
This book provides you with a simple series of integrated strategies for creating water-harvesting "nets" which allow rainwater to permeate and enhance our landscapes, gardens, yards, parks, farms, and ranches. Small-scale strategies are the most effective and the least expensive, so they are emphasized here. They're also the safest and easiest to accomplish. They can empower you to become water self-sufficient. The benefits are many. By harvesting rainwater within the soil and vegetationin the land, or in cisterns that will later irrigate the land, we can decrease erosion, reduce flooding, minimize water pollution, and prevent mosquito breeding (within water standing on top of the soil for more than three days). The process also generates an impressive array of resources: It can provide drinking water, generate high quality irrigation water, support vegetation as living air conditioners and filters, lower utility bills, enhance soil fertility, grow food and beauty, increase local water resources, reduce demand for groundwater, boost wildlife habitat, and endow us and our community with skills of self-reliance and cooperation! My Rainwater-Harvesting Evolution In 1994, my brother Rodd and I began harvesting water in our backyard by digging, then mulching a basin around a single drought-stressed sour orange tree.
Ross Garnaut says greenhouse gas targets to tackle climate change are ...
THE V8, bar fridge and dodgy air-conditioner could be things of the past as the man commissioned to review climate change policy urges MASSIVE cuts. Professor Ross Garnaut released his interim report from the Garnaut Climate Change Review in Adelaide today and warns Australia could "possibly be the biggest loser among developed nations". The report also states that Australia’s interest in strong global action stems from its "exceptional sensitivity to climate change", and its "exceptional opportunity to do well in a world of effective global mitigation". "We have many resources and skills that will allow us to convert strong global action into an economic opportunity," Professor Garnaut said. "We have a first-rate skills base in areas related to innovation, management and financial services.
Volcanic gas crimps Crater Rim Drive
HILO » Dangerously high levels of sulfur dioxide gas in a small but popular area of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park have officials warning visitors to stay in their cars with their air conditioner on re-circulation and to just drive through that area. The main area affected is a 5-mile stretch of Crater Rim Drive on the downwind, south side of Kilauea caldera. That means no stopping at a popular parking area at the beginning of a short path to Halemaumau Crater overlook. "Area closed due to dangerous volcanic gas. Stay in your car!" yellow-and-black warning signs say. The greatest danger is to babies and children, pregnant women and people with asthma or heart conditions, said spokeswoman Mardie Lane. Woman denies sex-on-air conditioner accusation
It was Sunday morning, and Arianna Scudelletti says she was simply having a drink with a male friend outside her grandmother's Naples home before walking down to the beach. Naples police, on the other hand, say it was a lot more risqué than that. Scudelletti, of Miami, and her friend Victor Manuael Martes, 24, of Miami Beach, were arrested Sunday morning and charged with disorderly conduct after a man who drove by the home with two children alerted Naples police to two people having sex on an air conditioner, according to arrest reports. Police officers who responded to the scene reported finding both Scudelletti and Martes in “different stages of undress." She said she was wearing bikini shorts and a T-shirt. “We were sitting there talking. We had a bottle of vodka," Scudelletti said in a jail interview Monday night.
Hominy warms to Mexican cuisine
On a hot Sunday afternoon toward the end of summer, a Jeep SUV was parked on Main Street with the doors unlocked and the engine running. In Tulsa, you'd be kind of brave -- or maybe kind of dumb -- to leave your keys in the ignition. But in Hominy, Alex Galvan and her father don't think twice about walking down the street for a snow cone to give the air conditioner time to work. "Crime?" her father says. "In Hominy? Don't worry about it." Javier Galvan used to run an authentic Mexican restaurant in east Tulsa, where he attracted loyal customers and earned a positive review from the World's food critic. But crime was a constant worry. "Stealing. Shooting. Robbing," he says. "Too much goes on there." A year and a half ago, when he heard about an old burger joint going out of business in downtown Hominy, Javier jumped in his Jeep to have a look around.
